February : But the Most Powerful
of These is Love
When you type in the word "love" on the google search bar, there are tons of websites that will come out - a few I came across were how to fall in love, how to heal from a broken heart, the science behind love, and alas.. quotes about love.. totalling to 18,270 famous quotes made by authors, actors, and actresses on just one 4 letter word. Amazing, isn't it? How one word can strike our hearts so powerfully, and leave us with the question that has yet to be answered.. "What is love?"
Remember those little autograph books that we had as kids? The ones we would ask our friends to sign? There was always a portion there that said, "Define love." And then afterwards the question would be, "Who is your crush?" -- Yes, I remember having my girl friends sign this.. I still kept them from our grade school days; and looking back I read answers that are, somehow, still popular up to this very day: "Love is blind", "Love is complicated", "Love is that funny feeling you get in your stomach", "Love is knowing that you want to spend everyday with that person", etc etc etc.
It really is funny how people immediately connect love to a crush or some form of a romantic relationship that on the 14th day of every single February, the relationship status suddenly becomes the most important thing in the world! I bet we're all guilty of saying this at one point in our lives..
"SINGLE AWARENESS DAY."
(haha)
Yes, we've all had our ups and downs when it comes to love - those moments when the guy we liked is attracted to someone else, dealing with a recent break-up, celebrating Valentine's Day alone consistently, grieving a loss, and so much more. Our hearts are fragile -- and love has the capacity to break and rebuild them. So, the question is, should it really all just be about something as.. well, let's face it, somewhat unstable as romance? Do our hearts really deserve to go through the crazy rollercoaster ride of emotions that comes with most romantic relationships all the time?
One of my best friends of 11 years (and counting.. hehe), Nadine Ann Zara, proves to me that romance is not what love is all about. She has been a consistent backbone throughout my struggles in life - be it as shallow as puberty pains to the depths of piecing back together my broken heart. She has seen me through my darkest days, especially back in my teenage years of angst when I somehow believed that everyone turned their backs on me, she didn't. She was always sweet in her own way, dropping me off little letters in the form of hearts reassuring me of how much she loves me and how she's so thankful for our friendship. All of the laughter that we shared while growing up, the secrets that we spilled every hour spent on the phone and every peso spent in a text message, the concerts we've attended together, the food we promised we'd never eat because we were on a "diet", the moments we spent exercising together training in badminton and "jogging", the embarassing photos that we have with all the baby fat and acne present, the graduation celebrations from grade school to college that were all celebrated together, and even up to the tears that we've shed while holding each other in our arms.. COULD NEVER BE REPLACED by the boys that have come and gone in our lives.. and even to those who seem to linger for longer than we'd expected or imagined. Because although romantic love has proven to be one that is worth the risk, the kind of love that a friendship this deep shares is one that is sure to last forever.. and that no matter what happens.. this kind of love will always be there to pick you up and bring out the best in you.
Now, allow me to bring out the best in her. :)

This is the kind of love that God has for us, the kind that always forgives, always trusts, always hopes.. the kind that never fails. Thank you, my dear Nadine, for reflecting the kind of love that God has for the world; and for being a shining light in my life.

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing." - 1st Corinthinans 13: 1-4
